THE RACE FOR THE OSCAR NOD

In the past two weeks we’ve seen nominations announced for the Golden Globes & the Grammys. Now it’s the Oscars turn, with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announcing 114 original scores in contention for Oscar nominations. Members of the music branch individually vote for up to five nominees from the complete list, with the five scores receiving the highest number of votes earning the nomination for the final vote.

An original score must be a “substantial body of music that serves as original dramatic underscoring” as well as “written specifically for the motion picture” to obtain eligibility for the award.

The heavyweights of the year are present, with well more than 5 deserving of the nomination. It’s noteworthy how many of these films sought the talents of a music supervisor to help tell their story. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, The Great Gatsby & The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug to name just a few. Song over score has become an increasingly valid choice for music in film.

A few additional thoughts: 1. What were your glaring omissions from this list of 114? 2. How many of these composers worked with a music supervisor to set the tone and style of the scores? 3. Should there be an Academy Award for music design that includes music supervisors?
